Increased production announced by Sylvania Resources 12th March 2008

Sylvania Resources has announced increased production for the half year ending December 31st 2007.

Total production was 5,621oz of 4E pgm, despite disruption to plant operations as a result of energy difficulties.

However, the firm said that its operations use relatively little power and are significantly less affected by power cuts than underground mining operations.

"In common with the rest of the South African platinum industry, Sylvania faces ongoing issues with electrical power supply," said Chief Executive Officer Terry McConnachie.

"Plant operations have been disturbed by planned and unplanned 'load shedding' activities by the state utility, Eskom," he added.

Production began at the Millsell and Steelpoort plants during the period and succeeded in running "in line" with management targets.

Millsell and Steelpoort are scheduled to produce 690 and 1,079 oz of 4E pgm per month respectively, when they reach full design.

This will mean combined production at the two operations will deliver 10,614 oz over a six-month period.

The company also posted pre-tax profits of AUD2.22 million compared to a loss of AUD6.72 million in the same period last year.
