Impala to resume Rustenburg production after weekend 7th August 2009

Impala Platinum revealed today (7th August) that all sections of its Rustenburg mine will reopen on Monday.

The number 14 shaft, part of the number 12 shaft and a range of other shafts were all closed down after a fall-of-ground incident killed nine workers at the site on 20th July.

However, the Department of Mineral Resources lifted its suspension on mechanised operations earlier this week and Impala has since been ramping up production in the relevant areas.

Alice Lourens, Spokesperson for the world's second-largest platinum producer, confirmed that the company is not sure how badly production has been impacted by the shutdowns.

In addition, she announced that the estimated loss of output in the mechanised sections of the bord-and-pillar mining system was approximately 700 oz per day.

Impala Platinum currently employs about 55,000 people (including contractors) across its operations, with 48,000 in South Africa and 7,000 in Zimbabwe.
