Impala Platinum and NUM reach wage deal 2nd August 2007
Impala Platinum has reached an agreement with South Africa's largest mining union, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), it has been announced.
The NUM has revealed it has agreed to Impala Platinum's wage offer of between 8.5 per cent and ten per cent for 2007, with across-the-board rises of 8.5 per cent in 2008.
Lesiba Seshoka, NUM spokesman, announced that the deal was nearing completion and although a few clauses remain outstanding, he insisted that the wage deal was close to being signed by both parties.
Speaking to Mining Weekly, Mr Seshoka said that around 20,000 of Impala Platinum's workers would benefit from the ten per cent increases, which will be given to the company's class-A and class-B employees.
The matter had been referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration last month after the union rejected a wage hike of between seven per cent and eight per cent for 2008.
