Icelandic fuel cell refuelling station opens to private cars 30th November 2007

A hydrogen filling station in Iceland for fuel cell vehicles has been opened to private cars, it has been announced.

The station is part of a pilot project headed by government-backed alternative energy solutions company Icelandic New Energy, which has set a target of having 40 fuel cell-powered vehicles on the streets of Reykjavik by the end of the 2009.

The station originally opened in 2003, but has hitherto solely been used by hydrogen-powered buses as part of a separate scheme.

However, under its new remit it will service ten new Toyota Prius cars, which Icelandic New Energy shareholder VISTORKA has loaned to leading Icelandic companies.

Of these three have been added to Hertz car rental's Helsinki fleet, thus exposing the city's tourists to the benefits of fuel cell vehicles.

Jon Bjorn Skulason, General Manager of Icelandic New Energy, told Reuters: "The future prospects for hydrogen are very bright. There is no other fuel in the world that fills the demands that fossil fuel fills today."
