Hydrogen fuel cell to drive Virgin Atlantic customers 4th March 2008
Chevrolet Equinox hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be used by Virgin Atlantic Airways as it provides "complimentary ground transfer service for upper class passengers".
The fuel cell vehicles will be serving passengers who land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after President of Virgin Atlantic Sir Richard Branson made the announcement.
From March Virgin will use three of the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell electric vehicles, which are fueled with hydrogen, for ground transportation running to and from the airport to the Los Angeles area.
The vehicles are powered by General Motors' hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system and Sir Richard described the partnership as a "pioneering" way to reduce emissions for air passengers.
"Our mission to be the sustainable airline is clear, both on the ground and in the air," he added.
General Motors is also running a scheme known as Project Driveway which is the largest fuel cell vehicle test ever as it uses more than 100 zero emission models on the streets of the US and the world.
