Hydrogen economy given research boost 16th April 2007
Six research projects have been provided with a combined total of $8.2 million in funding from the US Department of Energy (DoE) to look into hydrogen storage.
It is hoped that the move will help to improve the development of hydrogen storage facilities, thereby helping to develop solutions in the use of fuel cells.
One of the main barriers to the commercial deployment of fuel cell systems in vehicles and other operations is that hydrogen storage systems are currently not good enough to deliver the amount of power needed to make mobile fuel cells a viable option.
However, commenting on the efforts to tackle this problem, the DoE's secretary Samuel Bodman said: "Increasing hydrogen's efficiency and storage capacity are crucial to its long-term success, and we are eager for this research to help move us toward making hydrogen vehicles with a 300-mile plus driving range commercially available to consumers."
The six projects will run for four years and the programmes include those from Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois and the University of Hawaii on Honolulu.
