How power crisis has hit platinum production - latest 20th February 2008
Further details of the effect of the power crisis on miners in South Africa have been revealed.
Anglo Platinum has lost 30,000 ounces of refined platinum since the power problems - which have included a five-day shutdown - started, Reuters reports.
What's more, Anglo Platinum has estimated that a further 120,000 ounces of platinum will be lost this year following a request from state utility Eskom to reduce electricity consumption at its operations. As such, the company forecasts output will be in the region of 2.4 million ounces for 2008, down from 2.47 million ounces last year.
Meanwhile, Impala Platinum has said it expects to lose 30,000 to 40,000 ounces of platinum in 2008 and produce just less than two million ounces this year as opposed to the 2.03 million ounces in 2007.
+The power shortage in South Africa has been caused by the failure of electricity generation to match economic growth.
