Horizon champions new cost-effective fuel cell generator 3rd November 2010

Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies has launched a new hydrogen fuel cell generator for the portable, military and aerospace markets, it was confirmed yesterday (2nd November).

The company has produced a cartridge which is capable of using a solid chemical system to produce hydrogen, offering advantages over its battery-powered counterparts.

In addition, the product, which operates between -10C and 50C, requires no external hydration and has an unlimited lifespan before and after it is activated.

The generator is able to provide up to 150Wh of energy - the same as 100 AA batteries running at 1W each - while also costing 80 per cent less than similar existing systems.

"Horizon's new development fills the energy gap which exists in today's battery market, where power delivery is cheap but energy storage is expensive, especially during black-outs or off-grid situations," said Horizon Chief Executive George Gu.

"For applications requiring less than 1kW of power, this is the only energy storage technology that simultaneously resolves long term storage, ease of use, safety and low cost."

Meanwhile, First Energy and Ballard Power Systems revealed this week that they are testing what is thought to be the world's largest proton exchange membrane fuel cell.
