Hong Kong continues to tackle diesel emissions 25th November 2005
The Hong Kong government has announced plans to reduce emissions from heavy diesel vehicles.
It is hoped the legislative council's Air Pollution Control (Emission Reduction Devices for Vehicles) Amendment Regulation 2005, will go some way to coping with Hong Kong's notorious pollution problems.
The new regulations, which are set to begin in April of next year, will require owners of trucks and buses over four tonnes which were built prior to April 1995, to install emission-reducing filters.
The measures are intended to reduce the particulate emissions of heavy vehicles by 35 per cent.
Owners who fail to fit the devices or who fail to maintain them could face a cancellation of their licence.
Since 2003, light diesel vehicles built before 1995 have been required to install particulate filters.
