Fuel cells 'key' to sustainable mobility 7th August 2006

Fuel cell energy technology will be the key to sustainable mobility, according to DaimlerChrysler.

In a statement on its website, the car company said that sustainable mobility is a "corporate goal" at the firm, which builds luxury car brand Mercedes-Benz as well as the Chrysler and Smart marques.

The firm said that the goal of sustainable mobility would only be achieved if several objectives are followed - if cars can be made CO2 neutral using renewable energy sources and if drive systems can be made with greater efficiency.

To achieve those goals, DialmerChrysler has worked on developing fuel cell technology for automotives.

"No drive concept offers greater potential on the road to sustainable mobility than fuel cells powered by pressurised hydrogen," said the firm.

"The company therefore began focusing on this promising concept at a very early stage, and its current practical testing programme has put this innovative drive system well on the way to market launch."

It added that it is also looking to improve current fuels as well as the efficiency of combustion engines.
