Fuel cells installed at New York research authority 13th July 2006
Two fuel cells are to be installed at the headquarters of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (Nyserda).
The fuel cells will provide power to a variety of the headquarters' systems, including its computers, security and phones.
Fuel cell firm Plug Power will provide the fuel cell systems, which will provide backup power at the building.
Roger Saillant, Plug Power's chief executive, said: "Nyserda's investment in fuel cell and solar technology is a critical element in realizing the state-wide adoption of these alternative energy solutions.
"Plug Power has a lengthy history of collaboration with Nyserda, and the commercial installation of two GenCore units at its Columbia Circle headquarters is yet another milestone in our ongoing relationship."
Each fuel cell runs on hydrogen and can produce up to 5kW of electricity via a reaction between the hydrogen fuel and oxygen, promoted by a platinum catalyst.
"We are producing clean, efficient, home-grown energy with New York dollars and New York jobs, while at the same time protecting New York's environment," said the lieutenant governor of New York, Mary Donohue.
Plug Power recently announced that it has completed a deal that will see $217 million worth of investment flood into the company.
