Fuel cell to power classroom alongside renewable energies 27th February 2008

A fuel cell will be used alongside wind and solar energy in a mini power station that will provide power to a classroom in the UK.

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) has joined forces with Bydales School at Marske to create the project which is the first of its kind in the UK.

Energy generated by the wind turbine and solar panels can be stored as hydrogen in a tank and can be used alongside the fuel cell to power the school, the Evening Gazette reports.

Dr Jon Helliwell, Project Manager at CPI's fuel cell applications facility, said: "The fuel cell produces power with no carbon dioxide emissions - the only emission is pure water.

"The system is an excellent model for understanding the interactions between different renewable technologies and the use of hydrogen as a storage material," he added.

Dr Helliwell predicted that the future energy needs of the planet would be met by a variety of different technologies "with fuel cells high among them".
