Fuel cell theatre 30th July 2007
A new usage for fuel cell technology has been found in the arts world, it has been announced.
Arcola Energy has been launched to bring fuel cell technology to the theatre, with a five kilowatt Plug Power Gencore PEM fuel cell providing enough power for 50 state-of-the-art low energy theatre lights.
The portable fuel cell is the first major step in the ambitious project being undertaken by London's Arcola Theatre, which is aiming to develop a carbon neutral theatre using fuel cells and other environmentally-friendly technology to supply it with power.
Commenting on the theatre's aims, Dr Ben Todd, the theatre's Executive Director, said: "Implementing clean energy technologies at Arcola will be a very powerful tool in raising awareness of their practicality and relevance.
"We believe that in creating the first centre for new energy technology in the arts, we will be paving the way for cross-fertilisation between the arts and the sciences."
The fuel cell was developed as part of a joint venture between London Hydrogen Partnership, Transport for London and Camden Council.
