Fire hits Lonmin refinery 6th September 2006
Platinum producer Lonmin has shut its refinery following a fire.
The company has issued a statement revealing that a minor fire broke out at its precious metals refinery and although the blaze has now been put out, the plant will be closed for up to a week.
There were no injuries caused by the incident and the South African mining company has insisted there will be no permanent environmental damage.
Initial estimates from the company suggest that Lonmin could see deferment of as much as 25,000 ounces of platinum sales from the year ending September 2006 into the first quarter of the new financial year.
A full inquiry is being launched by Lonmin into the blaze and a further announcement on the impact it will have had on the business will be issued once this investigation has been completed.
