Xstrata signed a heads of agreement deal with Nkwe Platinum, the subsidiary of Genorah Resources. It will give Xstrata the option to acquire a maximum of a 50 per cent interest in five platinum group metal properties on the Bushveld Complex. Mxolile Nkuhlu, the Non-Executive Director of Nkwe Resources, revealed that the partnership would allow it to enhance its future products.

Platmin has announced that it has finalised an agreement with the Standard Bank of South Africa and Standard Chartered Bank that will see it arrange and underwrite a debt facility of $200 million to the Pilanesberg Platinum Mines. It will ensure that construction of the project is completed. The mine is on track to produce its first platinum group metals in the first quarter of 2009.

Wesizwe Platinum has become a "fully fledged platinum producer" during this year, according to its acting Chairman. Robert Raiy revealed that a feasibility study on its Frischgewaagd-Ledig project would allow construction work and the production of metals by 2011. It is thought that the operation could produce an average of 350,000 oz of platinum over a 35-year period when it comes into full production in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Wallbridge Mining Company announced a joint venture agreement with Impala Platinum. It will see Impala Platinum invest as much as $5 million over a three year period to a 50 per cent stake in the firm's mining properties. A further agreement could see Impala Platinum increase its stake to 65 per cent if it funds a feasibility study, as well as securing a portion of the development funding.

Impala Platinum is in the process of negotiating potential acquisitions. David Brown, the firm's Chief Executive, believes it is a good time for the company to be looking for acquisitions because of the difficult financial situation facing juniors. It has already signed agreements with Smokey Hills, Blue Ridge and the Crocodile River Mine to treat their concentrate.
