ESW in Chinese diesel bus retrofit 29th March 2006

Environmental Solutions Worldwide (ESW) has won a contract to supply catalysts for a diesel bus retrofit programme in China.

The firm was selected by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the task, which is a result of a partnership between EPA and SEPA set up last year to develop shared expertise in the clean vehicles market.

Using ESW's Particulate Reactor level II diesel emissions reduction catalyst, the EPA wants to help China refit its diesel-powered buses with clean technology.

The Southwest Research Institute will help manage the retrofits in Beijing, with a pilot programme scheduled for completion by summer next year.

ESW's president and chief executive David J. Johnson welcomed the news, saying the firm was "honoured" by its appointment.

"This programme represents a significant and exciting opportunity for ESW to demonstrate our catalyst technology in a high-visibility project in a key city that has a substantial air quality problem," he said.

"We believe that the Beijing demonstration will receive considerable attention and exposure both within China and around the world."

Johnson Matthey will be providing the diesel particulate filters, with the emissions reduction devices being fitted to transit buses run by Beijing Public Transport Holdings.

The company operates a fleet of around 19,000 buses, with about 8,000 of these running on diesel.
