Entries wanted for Johnson Matthey NY 2012 Sustainable Design Awards 26th October 2011

Johnson Matthey NY (JMNY) is calling on US-based, emerging platinum and palladium jewellery designers to submit entries for its 2012 Sustainable Design Awards.

The contest is open to independent jewellery makers and designers employed by a manufacturer or retailer with under five years experience in the industry. Postgraduates and final-year students can also enter.

Awards will be made in two categories: Platinum Love and Palladium Expression.

Creations can be submitted, with short descriptions of design meanings, in CAD or simply photographed. They must be wearable, have commercial viability, and be possible to make in either of the two metals.

There is no restriction on style, though stones and materials must be secondary to the platinum or palladium. Pieces cannot have been available commercially and must not have previously won an award or competition.

Designs can submit up to three pieces in each category, but not the same design in both categories. Winners must have the finance behind them to make the platinum or palladium piece.

The 2011 contest, the first Sustainable Design Awards, saw Jason Dow, Stephanie Satow and Erik Stewart recognised for their platinum ring designs.

The deadline for this year's entries is December 2nd. Entrants need to submit their entry, name, contact information, company name of affiliation, number of years in business and the category being entered by email to sustainabledesign@jmusa.com. Images should be kept to between one and three MB.

Judging will take place in December with the winners notified by the end of that month. The winning pieces will need to be finished by Feb 10th 2012.

To help them construct their designs, four winners will each receive one troy ounce or 20 pennyweights of platinum or palladium from JMNY.

The rest of the $30,000 prize package, which is co-sponsored by Platinum Guild International, Palladium Alliance International, Carrera Casting Corp, Rare Creative, and MJSA, includes a $500 grant, free casting, professional photography, inclusion in a celebratory ad in the MJSA Journal.

Winners will be announced and pieces showcased at a cocktail party during MJSA Expo on March 15th in New York.
