Emitec unveils next-gen diesel catalyst 4th April 2006
Leading exhaust designer Emitec has released details of a new diesel catalyst innovation that will increase efficiency, reduce installation size and reduce costs.
The company has used two metal foils with differing turbulent flow profiles in its oxidation catalyst.
Corrugated layers improve mass transfer which is important for lowering carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions in diesel engines.
Meanwhile, flat layers made of perforated foil increase efficiency by facilitating the exchange between different channels.
The new catalyst treats emissions as well as, or better than, a conventional catalyst, according to tests undertaken on up-to-date diesel engines.
And manufacturers wanting to implement the catalyst technology will be glad to hear that the system is cheaper than conventional models because less precious metal is needed.
Emitec's president, Mike Kerby, said: "Oxidation catalysts lower CO and HC emissions of diesel engines and support the functions of PM filter catalysts."
Mr Kerby added that it is important to achieve a high performance to volume ratio with catalysts, saying they "should be coupled as closely as possible to the engine".
Emitec was founded in 1986 and has its headquarters in Lohmar, Germany.
