Elizabeth Hurley has been showing off the platinum engagement ring given to her by fiancee Shane Warne.

The platinum ring features a large square sapphire with two diamonds on either side.

Jewellery expert Michael O'Connor explained to US Weekly that the platinum setting boasts a nine-carat blue sapphire and two-carat trillion cut diamonds.

"Shane made the right choice by setting the sapphire in platinum, since platinum doesn't change colour or fade - so it symbolises a relationship that will endure," he said.

He also suggested that the choice was a romantic one, explaining: "Since not only is blue sapphire a favourite of British royalty, but it's also his birthstone."

It is not dissimilar to Princess Diana's engagement ring, which Prince William gave to Kate Middleton before their wedding earlier this year.

That ring also featured a large sapphire in a platinum setting.
