Progress on Eastern Platinum's proposed mine expansion is likely to be fast-tracked, which in turn will boost production faster than expected, the company's President has announced.

Ian Rozier, CEO of Eastplats, said: "The effective equipping of the vertical shaft at Zandfontein and the concurrent incline development will enable us to fast track the proposed mine expansion at Crocodile River and should result in a faster production ramp up."

The equipping of the 415m deep, 8.5 m diameter vertical shaft at the Zandfontein section of the Crocodile River Mine is set to cost the firm R150 million.

The work, undertaken by Murray and Roberts Cementation and project managed by RSV, is expected to be complete by May 2008.

Prior to being relocated the headgear had been positioned over one of the two 1000m deep shafts at Kennedy's Vale.
