Diesel engine emissions standards widened 4th July 2006
Legislation limiting the amount of some harmful emissions that can be produced by diesel engines has been expanded to include stationary engines.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) adopted the rules for stationary engines used to generate electricity or to power pumps and compressors in power, chemical and manufacturing plants.
Emergency engines used to pump water in flooding or fire control circumstances will also have to comply with the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS).
The new limits will come into effect gradually in three stages, starting from 2007. Once they have been fully implemented in 2015, air pollutant emissions should be cut by 90 per cent, or more than 68,000 tons each year.
Emissions of nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons from new or reconstructed stationary diesel engines are all limited by the rules.
