Diesel cars prove the most cost-effective 16th October 2008
The top ten cars for fuel economy in the United Kingdom are all diesel-powered, it has been revealed.
Which?'s Complete Guide to Greener Driving shows that by switching to certain diesel-powered alternatives, drivers with petrol motors can make a significant monetary saving and also reduce CO2 emissions.
Diesel drivers in the UK will also be in line for a tax break from next year as the government is introducing measures designed to encourage motorists to switch to vehicles with the lowest carbon emissions.
"It's a win-win situation," commented Richard Headland, editor of the Which? Complete Guide to Greener Driving.
"Choosing a greener car will reduce your carbon tyreprint, cost less in road tax and you'll save money every time you fill up your car."
The diesel cars championed by Which? are the Fiat Panda 1.3 Multijet, Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D, VW Polo BlueMotion 1, Mini Clubman 1.5D Cooper, Audi A3 1.9 TDIe, Mazda2 1.4D, VW Golf BlueMotion, Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi 90, Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet and Renault Modus 1.5 dci 86.
The Fiat Panda 1.3 Multijet, Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D and VW Polo BlueMotion 1 models all run in excess of 60 miles to the gallon.
