Diesel cars at record popularity 11th July 2006
Diesel auto models have never been more popular in the UK, according to the latest industry figures.
According to statistics compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), diesel car sales made up a record 38.9 per cent of overall sales in June.
Supermini sales were also up by 2.1 per cent for the month.
"In a market that has wobbled on the back of weaker consumer confidence and higher fuel costs, it's not surprising that supermini cars and diesel models are picking up," said SMMT chief executive, Christopher Macgowan.
"New car buyers are increasingly aware of the benefits of smaller cars and those powered by highly-efficient and cleaner diesel engines. For company car drivers too, the tax benefits have never been clearer."
Despite the increased popularity of diesel models, new car sales across the UK fell 3.6 per cent compared to June 2005.
A total 219,497 cars were purchased during June, while figures for 2006 so far are 4.2 per cent down on the same period of last year.
