Detroit Diesel prepares new fleet of clean vehicles 29th March 2006

Engine manufacturer Detroit Diesel has unveiled its new, cleaner engines that incorporate advanced filtering and after-treatment systems.

Launched at the Annual Mid-America Trucking Show, its popular Series 60 heavy-duty engine has a new exhaust system that uses a diesel oxidation catalyst and a diesel particulate filter to reduce emissions.

Cleaning up the emissions of the engines will bring them into line with strict new guidelines laid down by the US environmental protection agency for next year.

Carsten Reinhardt, president of Detroit Diesel, said: "We have been working on not just meeting the new emissions standards, but enhancing our three engines set to launch next January."

Platinum catalysts and filters have long been used in petrol and diesel engines to help reduce pollution and this latest move to clean up diesel engines has been matched by Volkswagen and Toyota.

Pollution is reduced in Detroit Diesel's new engines by heating the catalysts to oxidise the soot. Other cleaner features reduce NOx formation and improve the engine management.
