Demand for LCD fuels annual profits for Corning 7th March 2007
Glass manufacturer and processor Corning's output rose by 52 per cent in 2006 as demand for Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens reached unprecedented levels.
Corning's improved performance is outlined in a report which identifies the doubling of demand for LCD televisions in 2006 as the driving factor for the company's increased output.
The manufacturer also revealed that it anticipates that LCD televisions - sales of which were up from 11 per cent in 2005 to 22 per cent last year - will account for a third of TV sales in 2007, as the price of sets continues to fall.
Meanwhile, the average size of a TV screen will move up to over 30 inches, requiring an extra ten per cent of glass.
Demand for computer monitors, which rose by a third in 2005, has also necessitated increased output from the company.
The booming demand has led to impressive sales figures of $5.17 billion for Corning, which represents an increase of 13 per cent from 2005.
