Daewoo goes for green diesel 21st November 2005

Car manufacturer Daewoo has announced plans to begin making environmentally-friendly diesel engines on a large scale.

The Korean company intends to start mass production of its two-litre Single Over-Head Cam (SOHC) common rail diesel engine, which will meet the European Union's stringent emission standards, in March of next year.

A new diesel particulate filter means the car meets the Euro IV emission standards, while tweaks have also reduced the noise and vibration of the engine.

The engine is a joint venture between GM Daewoo and Italian diesel engine developer VM Motori and will be built in a specially designed facility near Daewoo's assembly plant in Gunsan.

With an annual production capacity of 250,000 engines – all to Euro IV specifications – the move could be a significant one in the evolution of diesel technology.

The company, owned by General Motors, will initially install the engines in a new sports utility vehicle it is producing, during the first part of 2006.
