Court 'orders end to Aquarius strike' 14th May 2007
Aquarius Platinum has claimed that a court has ordered the company's mineworkers to return to work.
As many as 4,000 workers employed by a contractor have gone on strike at Aquarius' operations, but the firm has said that around 60 per cent of production at its Marikana mine and 15 per cent of its Kroondal mine's output has continued.
However, Charmane Russell, a spokesperson for Aquarius, announced on Friday that the court had granted an interdict for the strike, but added that it had not yet been served.
Once the interdict has been served, Aquarius Platinum will legally able to dismiss any staff who do not return to work.
South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) had not sanctioned the strike, Aquarius said, although the organisation has been carrying out efforts to resolve the matter.
