Corning unveils new super-thin glass substrates 9th June 2010
Corning Incorporated is set to commercialise its new line of thin glass substrates today (9th June), it has been confirmed.
The company will unveil the new EAGLE XG Slim designs - which are manufactured with pgms, among other materials - at the Display Taiwan 2010 event in Taipei.
James Clappin, President of Corning Display Technologies, revealed that the main focus at present is to enable portable devices with glass sizes up to Generation 5 at 0.4mm thick.
However, he also announced that the firm plans to roll out further variations in order to support more major applications, such as LCD televisions.
"As the first to supply commercial volumes of 0.5mm glass and now 0.4mm glass, Corning is pleased to apply its technology leadership to help enable the industry's continued advancement," said Mr Clappin.
"EAGLE XG Slim glass will allow device makers to reduce costs and provide a greener product while creating the sleek, multifunctional devices consumers desire."
Corning boasts a proprietary fusion process which can form thin glass and offers lower costs, a more simplified supply chain and reduced energy consumption when compared with other techniques.
Quest Diagnostics and Covance, the world's largest reference lab company and clinical research organisation respectively by market capitalisation, are both spin-offs of Corning.
