Corning ramps up LCD output 6th October 2005

Manufacturer Corning has announced plans to increase its production of LCD television screens with the expansion of one of its facilities.

The company stated that it is to invest $425 million in the expansion of its Taichung operation in Taiwan, which will allow greater capacity for the production of LCD screens.

According to Corning, the move has been instigated by the rapid growth in demand for LCD screens in recent months, which exceeded the firm's own expectations over the last quarter.

Announcing the investment just three weeks before its third quarter results are due to be published, Corning revealed that its LCD glass business increased by around 22 per cent during that period, up from the 15 to 20 per cent the company had targeted.

The investment in the Taichung facility, which is expected to come into operation in late 2006, highlights the growing interest from consumers worldwide in the LCD market.

Last month, market research firm iSuppli raised its forecast for forthcoming sales of LCD screens due to the growing demand for large LCD screens, fuelled by falling prices and increased acceptance of the screens among consumers.
