Corning launches larger-sized generation of glass substrates 10th November 2010
Corning Incorporated has released larger generation sizes of its EAGLE XG Slim glass substrates, it emerged on Monday (9th November).
The product line was originally released in June with glass sizes up to Generation 5 at 0.44mm thick to support the manufacture of lighter-weight portable devices.
However, the firm has taken the decision to add 0.5mm glass in Generations 7 and 8 - on top of the previous 0.7mm offerings - to be used in LCD panels for large televisions and monitors.
Lisa Ferrero, General Manager of Corning Display Technologies, explained that the change will represent a major step forward in the quest to reduce the thickness of televisions in particular.
"As the first to supply commercial volumes of slim glass substrates, Corning continues to lead the industry migration toward thinner devices," she said.
"By adding larger sizes to the EAGLE XG Slim product line, Corning is helping the industry address growing consumer demand for thin and sleek televisions."
Corning, which was founded in 1851 and is based in New York, is also looking to develop 0.3mm substrates for glass sizes supporting portable electronic devices.
