Closure hits pgms production at Kroondal Mine 21st November 2007
The five-day suspension of operations at the Kroondal mine will result in a loss of 4,000 oz of platinum group metals (pgms), its joint owners Aquarius Platinum and Anglo Platinum have announced, as the mine reopened yesterday.
Of the lost production some 2,000 oz is attributable to Aquarius Platinum, with the firm not expecting to make up the shortfall in the current quarter, a statement said.
The mine reopened after agreement was reached between the Department of Minerals and Energy, union officials and representatives of both miners, following an industrial accident that resulted in the death of a worker.
Johannes Tseliso Nthunya, an underground LHD operator employed by mining contractor Murray & Roberts Cementation, was killed in a rockfall in the mine's central shaft last Thursday.
Employees were re-trained in health and safety practices during the mine's downtime.
