Clean diesel demonstrated 27th August 2003

Leading American and European carmakers yesterday demonstrated the most up to date clean diesel technology at the Clean Diesel Drive at Boston's Bayside Expo Centre.

The occasion was organised by the Diesel Technology Forum, and featured more than a dozen clean diesel production and prototype vehicles. Some of the technology showcased had not previously been seen in the United States.

The diesel Technology Forum's executive director Allen Schaeffer said the event demonstrated the automotive industry's commitment to reducing emissions:

'We want Massachusetts lawmakers and other government officials to experience first-hand how powerful, quiet, clean and fun to drive a modern diesel vehicle can be. Today's clean diesel technology has made tremendous progress.

'Diesel engines are a proven, efficient and readily-available technology that can reduce fuel consumption and improve our energy security', he said.

'And thanks to cleaner-burning engines, lower-sulphur fuel and better emissions control technology, diesel is on a path of continuous environmental improvement. State-of-the-art diesel cars, pickups and SUVs emit virtually no visible tailpipe exhaust.'

With diesel sales currently running at a third of all new vehicles in Europe, and a come-back for the fuel predicted across the US, the event was timely, and showed both consumers and legislators its viability in the light of stringent emissions regulations in all major markets.
