Chrysler's platinum spark plugs tweak performance 6th January 2005
Chrysler has unveiled a new engine which features platinum-tipped spark plugs for optimum performance.
The automotive giant has unveiled an updated version of the 1950's Chrysler HEMI engine, with the spark plugs marking just one of the many advances in the 50 years since its inception.
Powertrain engineers at Chrysler's research and development site have added 25 per cent more power, providing the highest specific output of any V-8 engine ever offered by the firm.
Two platinum tipped spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixtures in the engine, with the precious metal said to aid the power and acceleration of the vehicle.
Eric Ridenour, executive vice president of product development with Chrysler, said the changes to the "legendary HEMI" would take it "to a new level of benchmark performance".
Platinum-tipped spark plugs have become a popular choice for engineers seeking to tweak performance, with a number of professional NASCAR racing teams in the US backing the innovation.
