Ceres Power and Centrica to deliver fuel cells to UK homes 21st March 2006
Ceres Power and Centrica have entered into a £2.7 million agreement to deliver fuel cells into UK homes.
The two companies are hoping to use fuel cells to deliver an alternative source of domestic heat and power.
Ceres Power, which is a leading developer of fuel cell technology, earlier this year successfully delivered a production-engineered 1kW fuel cell stack generating sufficient power for the average home.
"Ceres technology will enable up to two-thirds of UK households to use highly efficient and environmentally-friendly CHP [combined heat and power] appliances in their homes," predicted chief executive Peter Bance.
Centrica, the company that owns British Gas, is among a number of providers of traditional fuels keen to invest in greener alternatives.
Through both environmental and economic pressures, economies like the UK need to move away from traditional forms of heat and power.
Fuel cells are a renewable energy source that could one day power everything from mobile phones to buses.
