Catalytic converters lead SA components boom 8th October 2007
Demand for catalytic converters from South Africa has increased substantially in recent times, according to the country's National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (Naacam).
The Times South Africa reports that the South African components market is enjoying a boom in exports and catalytic converters are leading the way.
Naacam Chief Executive, Roger Pitot, said at the Wheels into Africa Conference over the weekend that component exports had exceeded R30 billion over the course of 2006, representing a massive jump from 2000, when component exports stood at R12 billion.
Catalytic converters alone accounted for R15 billion of the exports last year, Mr Pitot explained.
He also confirmed that Naacam is in support of the South African government's Industrial Policy Action Plan which was launched in August and is aimed at improving the automotive and components industries so as to include more local content in vehicles.
