CARB funds diesel particulate filter programme 18th February 2008
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has chosen Cascade Sierra Solutions (CSS) to administer $1 million for the upgrade of tractor-trailer trucks with diesel particulate filter (DPF) equipment.
CSS will work in conjunction with the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District and sort through applications to ensure that the oldest and most polluting trucks are the ones which are able to benefit from the programme.
Furthermore, the amount of funding provided will be based on the number of annual miles driven in California, the model year of the engine and whether the DPF device filters both particulate matter and nitrogen oxides.
The programme has been designed to reward voluntary early compliance to new rules which target the reduction of particulate matter emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks.
A DPF is designed to trap or remove exhaust particles and makes use of a oxidation catalyst which typically contains platinum.
Diesel particulate matter has been linked to a number of health ailments including asthma attacks and non-fatal heart attacks.
