California unveils fuel emissions plan 13th August 2007

The University of California has launched a new plan aimed at cutting carbon emissions across the state.

The Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) was drawn up at the request of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and is aimed at reducing the amount of carbon emissions caused by transport in the state by ten per cent by 2020.

It is hoped that the LCFS will provide a catalyst for motor manufacturers to deliver greater technological developments that will cut the amount of carbon emissions being produced by vehicles in the future.

Much work has already been done to achieve a significant reduction in emissions produced by diesel vehicles, thanks to improvements in the efficacy of catalysts, while fuel cell technology is also being developed to bring about an end to the use of fossil fuels in vehicles.

If the LCFS is adopted by the state of California, all fuel providers in the state will need to track the global warming intensity of their products, with the aim of reducing this value over the course of the coming decade.
