California to help eastern states cut emissions 17th October 2006
It has been announced that California is to partner with a number of states on the east coast of the US to help them cut emissions levels.
California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has agreed a deal with his counterpart in New York to work together on ways to tackle emissions and cut the amount of pollution being produced in the country.
It is hoped that the consortium will work together to develop new initiatives, with the potential to create a multi-state market for the trading of carbon credits already having been mooted as a potential benefit of the scheme.
California is renowned for having some of the most stringent emissions laws, with vehicles in the state facing high penalties if they fail to meet regulations on the level of emissions that they produce.
