California reduces vehicle emissions level 13th September 2005
A report spanning the years from 1975 up to 2020 has found that Californian vehicle emissions have been reduced.
Entitled The Contribution of Diesel Engines to Emissions of ROGs, Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) in California, the report details advances in diesel engines and reduced fuel emissions.
Sierra Research compiled the report for the Diesel Technology Forum (DTF) using data from the whole of California.
It found that statewide on-road NOx emissions had dropped by 30 per cent since 1990, and it predicts that they will drop another 64 per cent between now and 2020.
By 2020, it is expected statewide on and off-road PM emissions will be reduced to 29 per cent and 43 per cent respectively in comparison to their 1990 levels.
Allan Schaeffer, DTF executive director, said that further advances in emissions technology expected over the coming years should have a further impact on emissions reduction.
"The new clean diesel technologies and fuels now being developed for 2007 and 2010 will deliver even more substantial benefits to California's air quality," he said.
