Boston Scientific has received further approval for its platinum chromium stent system, it was confirmed yesterday (21st September).

The PROMUS Element Everolimus-Eluting Coronary Stent System has been given the CE Mark for use in patients with concomitant diabetes mellitus and those experiencing heart attacks.

Consistent lesion coverage and drug distribution are the main features of the stent, which also improves deliverability through an advanced catheter delivery system.

"We are pleased to receive these expanded indications for the high-risk diabetic and AMI patient groups," said Keith D Dawkins, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Boston Scientific's Cardiology, Rhythm and Vascular Group.

"The platinum chromium PROMUS Element Stent has been well received by physicians since its launch last year in CE Mark countries, and these new indications are important additions."

Boston Scientific is now awaiting approval for the PROMUS system in the US and Japan, with both countries expected to give it the green light in mid-2012.

The company's products are used in a range of interventional medical specialties, including neuromodulation, electrophysiology, cardiac surgery, endoscopy, oncology, urology and gynecology.
