Boost for PEM fuel cells 7th December 2005
The fuel cell industry has received a boost with the announcement of new technology that increases Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell efficiency.
The Georgia Institute of Technology has raised hope for widespread use of fuel cell technology in cars by using the chemical triazole to heat PEM fuel cells, improving efficiency.
Dr Meilin Liu, leader of the research believes the development will be life changing.
"Triazole will greatly reduce many of the problems that have prevented polymer fuel cells from making their way into things like cars, cell phones and laptops," he told Fuel Cell Today.
"It's going to have a dramatic effect," he added.
The researchers claim that the technology will allow PEM fuel cells to operate above 120 degrees C and will greatly simplify the cooling system.
Fuel cell engines are being tested on a number of buses in the US but mass car production is still thought to be years away, with DaimlerChrysler recently suggesting a 2012 launch date for their fuel cell car.
