Barrick Gold considers its platinum options 10th September 2007

Barrick Gold has said it is considering selling off its platinum and nickel assets in the near future.

According to Chief Executive Gregory Wilkins, the mining company will decide in a year's time whether its platinum and nickel assets have added any value to the company and if none can be seen, it will spin them off.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Mr Wilkins said: "The next 12 months will be the first decision point."

The company owns a platinum deposit in South Africa following its acquisition of Placer Dome last year, but Mr Wilkins explained: "If we look at the valuation of the company and figure that the assets aren't being recognised, then we'll float them and get them recognised."
