Banker makes splash for £300k ring 16th November 2005

A wealthy city banker has pocketed a sizeable Christmas bonus and spent it on a dazzling platinum ring.

The ring features an 8.13 carat diamond set in a platinum band and cost the anonymous Londoner £300,000.

Analysts say the purchase is indicative of a good year for the City, with brokers and bankers splashing their bonuses on luxury items.

Boodles, which sold the "cocktail" ring, said that the man's outlandish purchase capped a stellar period of business, with sales up by as much as 30 per cent on the back of generous outlays.

James Bennett, branch manager with the firm, told the Evening Standard that the "classic and brilliant" cut ring had been a big hit.

"He showed it to his wife and she really loved it, so last Monday he gave me a cheque.

"So we're happy, he's happy and she's very happy," he added.

Earlier this year figures indicated that high-end luxury items such as white metals were becoming increasingly popular in the jewellery industry.

In a forerunner of what could be a good Christmas for high-end jewellers, International Jewellery London said the message from the sector was "bigger and better".
