Australia set for first platinum project 10th January 2007

Australia is on the verge of its first platinum project being launched, it has been revealed.

Platinum Australia is just months away from opening its mine for production in the Kimberley, in Western Australia, after it was revealed that a viability study is now almost complete.

The Panton Project looked to have come to an end in 2003 after it was said to be commercially unviable, however ABC reports that the increase in platinum prices over recent years means that the project may now have become worthwhile.

John Lewins, Managing Director of Platinum Australia, said: "If the results are positive then we would hope to move to the next step of development within months literally of having got to that."

However, he struck a note of caution, adding: "There's financing and things like that to be arranged."
