Aquarius Platinum suspends operations at Everest 9th December 2008
Aquarius Platinum confirmed yesterday (8th December) that it has suspended operations at its Everest platinum mine in South Africa.
The temporary closure, which is expected to last for at least one week, was caused by geotechnical problems, the company confirmed in a statement.
One section read: "Instability has developed in the main decline into the mine, in part attributed to a shear zone above the decline, a feature of the geology at Everest.
"The company's rock engineering specialists are currently assessing the situation. It is expected that the suspension of operations will be for at least one week."
The statement added that no workers are at risk.
