The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) confirmed yesterday (17th September) that a worker has been killed at Impala Platinum's mine near Rustenburg in South Africa.

In an emailed statement, the union stated that the incident "is due to a locomotive and the details are still sketchy".

It also confirmed that inspectors from the government and union safety stewards have been dispatched to the mine in order to investigate the fatality.

Meanwhile, Anglo Platinum, the world's largest platinum producer, has revealed today that a worker who was injured at its Amandelbult mine last month has died in hospital.

Spokesman Simon Tebele said that the worker, who suffered his injuries on 25th August at the company's second-biggest mine, died at 03:00 BST this morning.

The news is another blow for the mining industry in South Africa, with a total of 121 people now having been killed in incidents so far this year.
