Angloplats confirms union deal 5th October 2005
Platinum miner Angloplats has finally confirmed to the public the terms of the deal it struck last month with South Africa's National Union of Miners (NUM).
Following extended and protracted talks, Angloplat and the NUM reached a deal last month to ensure that operations at the company's South African mines continued without the threat of strike action.
Some days after the deal had been agreed, Archie Palane, deputy general secretary of the NUM divulged details of the agreement to Reuters, stating that workers would be given wage increases of 6.5 to seven per cent over the two years of the deal.
These figures have now been confirmed by Angloplats, which has stated that the terms of the deal include increases of 6.5 per cent which began in July 2005 and a further 0.5 per cent increase which will begin from January 2006.
This will be followed by a seven per cent increase in wages from July 2007, Angloplats added.
Angloplats also confirmed that the wage increases will apply across the board, to all 40,000 workers at its operations.
