Angloplat warns of potential problems from power supply 26th March 2004

Anglo Platinum has warned that the power disruption occurring in the North West province of South Africa could affect pgm production if it continues.

Earlier this week a shortage hit the Eskom power supply to Rustenburg and Brits, causing problems for a number of pgm miners.

Yesterday Lonmin said in a statement that the problem would only have a marginal effect on full-year production, but the new comments from Angloplat spokesman Mike Mtakati suggest the power cut could still pose difficulties.

"It is too early to say if the reduced power will effect production. However, if it continues through next week we will have to put out a statement," AngloPlat spokesperson Mike Mtakati said.

Angloplat's Rustenburg operations have continued to suffer since two transformers failed, although Eskom has now restored power to large parts of the region.

However, Eskom says the disruption is only likely to be completely resolved when replacement transformers are installed in the second week of April, leading Mr Mtakati to warn of potential production problems.

The disruption has also resulted in Angloplat's Rustenburg smelters operating under reduced power.
