Anglo Platinum wage offer rebuffed 31st May 2007

Anglo Platinum's first wage offer has been rejected by South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), it has been revealed.

The NUM has stated that it has refused to agree to the platinum miner's offer of a six per cent pay rise and is determined to stick to its demand of 15 per cent.

"We would like to remind the powers that be at Anglo that the NUM is in no way playing when it talks of double digits," the NUM reiterated.

The NUM made the statement following the first round of talks between unions and Anglo Platinum and the offer represented the first formal wage offer as South Africa's mining firms begin talks to negotiate new contracts with miners.

The new contracts are due to come into effect on July 1st and Anglo Platinum has already said it is hopeful that a deal can be reached before that deadline and avoid any strike action.
