Anglo Platinum shuts shaft after miner death 18th October 2007

Anglo Platinum has announced the closure of its Paardekraal shaft in Rustenburg following the death of a mineworker at the site.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) confirmed that one worker had been killed and another seriously injured at he shaft and as a result, the mine's operations have been closed.

Anglo Platinum spokesman, Simon Tebele, told Reuters that he could not give any idea as to how log the shaft would be shut following the accident, nor was he able to provide any idea as to how much production would be lost due to the incident.

"The shaft where this happened is closed. It was closed immediately after the accident," Mr Tebele confirmed.

This incident comes a day after Northam Platinum announced the halting of production at its mine following an accident resulting in the death of a worker.
